High protein, low carb foods play an important role in diets that restrict carbohydrates in favor of protein.  Is a high protein diet for weight loss going to address your need to lose weight compared to other diets?  Some think so.

If you follow the Atkins Diet or South Beach Diet you know these diets rely on protein to help you lose weight fast.  Do people have success on these diets?  Absolutely!  Do people stay on these diets for a long time?  They do if they make a lifestyle change.

Numerous studies suggest a high protein diet for weight loss show good results in the first 3-6 months.  But after 1 year, the weight loss is not sustained with high protein, low carb foods.  It seems that at every turn, your solutions for obesity, are challenged with real evidence that there is no quick way to accomplish your goals in 30 days or less.

High Protein Low Carb Foods

No one is impressed with diets that help you lose weight over the long haul.  You want results and you want them quick.  So what is the best way to have success with a high protein, low carb diet?

  • Get a “Metabolic Type” test if you can afford it
  • Plan out your diet in advance (this is a given for any diet)
  • Establish realistic goals so you don’t give up too soon
  • Choose lean protein over fatty meats
  • Choose your carbs wisely because you don’t get many
  • Supplement your diet with the right vitamins and minerals

Many people choose to restrict or completely eliminate animal protein from their diet.  Does this exclude you from starting a high protein low carb diet

No!  There are many great plant-based proteins you can incorporate into your diet.  Here is a short list of some of the plant-based proteins you should consider:

  • Legumes (beans, lentils, peas and peanuts)
  • Nuts (walnuts, almonds, pistachios and hazelnuts)
  • Whole grains (brown rice, oats, corn, quinoa, amaranth and wheat)
