Symptoms of gestational diabetesDiabetes symptoms in women occur as often as they do in men.  Unfortunately, the timing does not favor women sometimes.  The third trimester is when symptoms of gestational diabetes occur most frequently.

Hormonal changes occur during pregnancy and one of the things that happens is you may develop some level of impaired glucose intolerance.

This basically means your sugar level is higher than it should be, but usually not to the point where you develop diabetes. Diabetes symptoms in women do become more of a concern during the third trimester

Your placenta produces hormones stopping you from developing low blood sugar levels by resisting the actions of insulin.  It’s crazy, but your pancreas produces tons of insulin and creates symptoms of gestational diabetes for you.

Am I Diabetic?  What Are The Risk Factors For Diabetes Symptoms In Women?

Most of the women who develop gestational diabetes have no known risk factors.  Some of the risk factor that have been identified are:

  • Being overweight or obese before becoming pregnant
  • Being in a high risk ethnic group (Asian, Native American, Hispanic and Black)
  • Giving birth to a child who weighed more than 9 pounds
  • Having symptoms of gestational diabetes in a previous pregnancy
