Symptoms Of Gestational Diabetes In Women

If you are concerned about developing symptoms of gestational diabetes, particularly during the third trimester, there are things you can do:

  • Try to get as close to your ideal body weight
  • Eat a specific breakfast for diabetics to start the day
  • Manage your calories evenly throughout the day
  • Monitor your sugar level 4 times a day
  • Be careful to keep weight gain to a minimum
  • Keep your blood pressure under control

So What Is A Good Breakfast For Diabetics?

In a small study conducted in Toronto, Canada, it was found that women who ate low glycemic index foods were able to control their glucose levels better than women who ate high glycemic index foods.

Symptoms of gestational diabetesThe glycemic index (GI) is a value from 1 to 100.  The lower the number is the less effect it will have on your sugar levels.  Many fruits and vegetables fall into the low GI index category.

Junk food, on the other hand, is not a good food choice because it will mess with your sugar levels and potentially have an impact on your baby.

Interestingly, carbohydrates are not the greatest choice of breakfast for diabetics.  If you like protein, you’ll like these 5 ideas:

  • Veggie and cheese omelet
  • Breakfast taco with turkey sausage and eggs
  • Cheese and ham on a whole wheat toasted muffin
  • Canadian bacon and egg sandwich on whole grain bagel
  • Peanut Butter and Waffle sandwich

Should Diabetes Symptoms In Women Be Of Concern To You?

Yes!  Women who are overweight, obese or are gaining weight rapidly during pregnancy are at much greater risk for symptoms of gestational diabetes than women closer to ideal body weight.

So what should you do to prevent gestational diabetes from becoming a problem?

  • Eat more protein at breakfast
  • Focus on low glycemic index foods the rest of the day
  • Get as much exercise as you can, don’t be lazy!
  • Lose belly fat before you get pregnant
  • Trash the junk food, it’s hurting your baby

If you are more than 20% above your ideal body weight, lose weight before you get pregnant to have a safe pregnancy.  Diabetes symptoms in women become more pronounced during pregnancy, especially in the second and third trimester.
